In a significant development ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) have roped in former India pacer Varun Aaron as their new bowling coach. The franchise made the official announcement on Monday through their social media handle, welcoming the former speedster to their coaching staff.

> "A fiery addition to our coaching staff! Welcome Varun Aaron as our new bowling coach," SRH posted on their official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Aaron will take over the role from James Franklin, the former New Zealand left-arm fast bowler, who previously served as SRH’s bowling coach.

FROM EXPRESS PACE TO STRATEGIC GUIDANCE

Varun Aaron, once hailed as one of India's fastest bowlers, is remembered for his ability to consistently hit speeds in excess of 150 kmph. He made his debut for the Indian national team in 2011 and represented the country in nine Test matches and nine One Day Internationals (ODIs) over the span of four years.

Aaron's raw pace and aggression quickly caught the attention of the selectors, and alongside Umesh Yadav, he was seen as a future spearhead of India's fast-bowling attack. However, while Umesh went on to have an extended run with the Indian team, Aaron’s international career was curtailed by a series of unfortunate and frequent injuries that stalled his progress.

Despite the setbacks, Aaron remained a valuable performer in domestic cricket and featured in multiple IPL franchises, including Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals), Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals, and Kolkata Knight Riders.

RETIREMENT AND TRANSITION TO COACHING

Aaron played his last competitive game on January 5, 2025, for Jharkhand in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Goa in Jaipur. After Jharkhand failed to qualify for the knockout stages, the pacer decided to hang up his boots, officially bringing an end to his playing career.

Post-retirement, Aaron remained involved in the game, appearing as a television cricket pundit and later taking up a coaching stint at the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai the same academy where he was once trained under the guidance of Glenn McGrath. His brief but impactful coaching experience alongside McGrath proved to be a stepping stone in his new journey as a mentor.

NEW ROLE WITH SUNRISERS HYDERABAD

With his appointment as bowling coach, Aaron now steps into a key strategic role in the SRH support staff. His firsthand experience as a tearaway fast bowler, combined with his recent coaching exposure, positions him well to work with SRH’s young and experienced pace attack alike.

The 35-year-old brings not just technical know-how, but also valuable insight into managing pace, injury prevention, and handling pressure all essential for success in the demanding environment of the IPL.

As SunRisers Hyderabad look to revamp and rebuild ahead of the 2026 season, Aaron’s presence could provide a fresh and dynamic edge to their bowling unit.

With this move, SRH has signaled its intent to blend youth and experience, both on and off the field, as the franchise sets its sights on a stronger showing in the upcoming IPL season.
