Series name: India tour of England
The winds of change are blowing through Indian cricket as the Test team enters a new era. With stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin retiring from the longest format, a youthful Indian side led by Shubman Gill has taken the field for the first Test of the five-match series against England at Headingley, Leeds.
SAI SUDHARSAN DEBUTS ON HISTORIC DATE
India handed a maiden Test cap to Sai Sudharsan, who becomes the 317th cricketer to represent India in Tests. The left-handed batter was presented his cap by Cheteshwar Pujara and will bat at No.3 in the lineup. His debut holds special significance as it falls on June 20, the same date on which both Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly made their Test debuts in 1996, and Virat Kohli in 2011.
KARUN NAIR RETURNS AFTER EIGHT-YEAR HIATUS
Another notable change in the lineup is the return of Karun Nair, who makes a comeback to the Test side after eight years. Nair, who scored a double century in his brief earlier stint, is slotted to bat at No.6 after an impressive showing for India A against the England Lions.
NEW BATTING ORDER UNDER SHUBMAN GILL’S LEADERSHIP
With a reshuffled batting order, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal will open the innings for India. Shubman Gill, captaining the side for the first time in Tests, has chosen to bat at No.4, taking up a pivotal role in the middle order. Rishabh Pant, returning from injury, will keep wickets and bat at No.5.
BALANCED BOWLING ATTACK WITH THREE PACERS AND ALL-ROUNDERS
India has opted for a pace-heavy bowling attack with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna as the primary fast bowlers. Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja have been included as all-round options, providing depth in both departments. Bumrah has already stated that he will feature in only three Tests in this series as part of his workload management plan.
WHAT THE CAPTAINS SAID AT THE TOSS
At the toss, England captain Ben Stokes won and chose to bowl first, citing favourable early conditions at Headingley. He said:
“We'll bowl. Headingley is a very good cricket wicket,.We've had some really good games here. Want to try and use the early conditions. Been a long time coming, but it's a bit strange that this is just the second series, but we're ready.”
India skipper Shubman Gill echoed the sentiment:
“We would have bowled first as well. We’ve gone with three fast bowlers and Shardul Thakur. Sai is making his debut and Karun Nair returns to the lineup.”
TRIBUTE TO AIR INDIA CRASH VICTIMS
In a show of solidarity, both teams are wearing black armbands as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the recent Air India plane crash.
