Ben Charlesworth, introduced into the First XI at only 17, was one of the more uplifting elements of a mediocre Gloucestershire Championship season in 2018. Granted time off from his A level studies by St Edwards School in Oxford, he mustered two half-centuries in nine innings, including a polished unbeaten 77 against Middlesex during which he brought up his maiden 50 by advancing down the pitch to hit Dawid Malan's leg spin straight for six. No Gloucestershire player had struck a half-century at such a tender age for more than 70 years. He then followed up with three wickets by the close, Malan among his victims.
